Flashback to October/November 2015: I start doing a bit of research on new authors for 2016 and books I was looking forward to in the new year.
On December 1st, 2015 I posted a Top Ten Tuesday on 2016 debut novels I was looking forward to. If you’ll notice I listed After the Woods by Kim Savage first because let’s be honest how amazing is that cover?! Also, the story itself sounded like a perfect fit for what I enjoy reading.
For three months I waited for that book. I waited and waited and yes, I waited some more. Finally, it was February 23, 2016, and I had one agenda. Drive to Barnes & Noble and purchase After the Woods. I was not working at the time (I was still a full-time college student) but I saved my pennies.
Walking into Barnes & Noble on book release day is somewhat magical if you ask me. I had one title in mind. I had to have it. After searching in all the usual spots I approached the customer service desk and ask where I could find a copy. They informed me they did not receive that book. WHAT?!?! When were they expecting to get copies? They may never get copies. WHAT?! At that moment I realized how important preorders were – especially for debut authors. I took to Twitter and vented a bit and then called the closest Books A Million (about 1/2 hour away). They didn’t get it either. I returned home and moped all day.
Every time I went to a bookstore after that I searched for it. You have to understand I go to bookstores more than the average person. I never found it. After I got my Kindle and read a few ARCs I received via NetGalley I made my first official ebook purchase and you guessed it…After the Woods by Kim Savage it was. For those who have been following me for awhile know, I much prefer physical books to ebooks or audio books. I have gotten better at reading ebooks but I still prefer one over the other. I began reading After the Woods but then the whole ebook struggle hit and I set it aside to start reading something else. Now that I owned it when I was in the mood I would be ready!
Fast forward a few months with no more progress on After the Woods and I post a Waiting On Wednesday post about a release I am looking forward to. The book? Beautiful Broken Girls by Kim Savage. Expected to release in February 2017. I had no idea that the author herself would reach out to me on Twitter after seeing the post and ask me to DM her!!! First I fangirled that she even took the time to check out the post at all and secondly she tweeted me. Seriously my day was made. Fingers trembling I type out a short and sweet “Hi. Again I just wanted to say how excited I was in regards to Beautiful Broken Girls & thanks you for taking the time to check out my blog post :). I hope you’re having a wonderful Wednesday.” Never in a million years did I think she would offer to send me one of her author copies. NEVER! But she did. I couldn’t believe it.
Less than a week later I received a bubble mailer addressed to me in black sharpie. Who sent it? Savage. I feel silly but the pieces were not connecting. I blame it on the long day at work. I was thinking, “Who is Savage?” My #otspsecretsister? A publisher? After tearing into it I immediately starting squealing because I realized the author sent me not only an author copy but she mailed it to me herself. I took to Snapchat and shared me fangirling and then to Twitter to thank Kim for being the best ever. She also sent a few bookmarks and she signed it! Thank you so much Kim, you made one reader truly happy!
After the Woods is without a doubt going to be my next read. It’s been a year since I knew I wanted to have it and now I have it thanks to the author who wrote it. How crazy is that?
I had to share that story with you because it’s just too cool not to share. I will of course report back after reading and let you know all my thoughts.
