In her strongest work to date, Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever. As she did in The Giver, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, and what will be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kira’s plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future. (Goodreads)

If you have been reading along or watching on YouTube lately you will see that I recently read and fell in love with The Giver. I am still obsessed about that book and can’t for the life of me express how happy I am that it is in my life. Who knew that picking up a free book would basically change my life? After reading The Giver I couldn’t get it off my mind so for the first time ever I immediately went to get the other books in the quartet. I went to a few different stores and was unable to find the boxed set of all 4 books, but I was lucky enough to find the second book and purchased it immediately. I felt bad for any book to follow my favorite book of all time, but what  better way to move on than with the next book ya know.

This story has a new cast of characters and they are still lingering in my mind more than a week later. In this story we follow Kira. Her father was killed by beasts and her mother just passed away from an illness. So right from the beginning Kira is orphaned and recruited by the Council of Guardians to continue the work that her mother could no longer do. Kira’s talent far exceeds the abilities of her mother so the Council has plans for using Kira to their advantage. Kira was born with a twisted leg so for much of her life she was shunned by the townspeople. Now she has a purpose, now she has a future. Kira, a towns boy named Matt, and another boy living at the Council of Guardians start figuring out things that are contrary to what they have been led to believe. Secrets are revealed and intentions are exposed in yet another masterpiece by Lois Lowry. I highly recommend this book. I rated Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry 4 stars.
